GULF DAILY NEWS TABLOID - ART & CULTURE

A touch of Ye Olde England came to Dubai as a visiting theatre company staged a production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.
VIP guests were treated to dinner and cocktails as members of the UK Touring Theatre performed on a makeshift stage on the lawns of the hotel in Dubai marina. Counting Dame Judi Dench among one of its patrons, the touring company put on a spirited rendition of the classic play - with an amusing slice of audience participation as one highly embarrassed guest was forced to play the part of a wall.

Hole in the wall
As the character of Bottom, played by Matthew Craig, whispered sweet nothings to his pretend sweetheart through a hole in the wall (the guest's outstretched hand), the rest of the audience breathed a large sigh of relief they had not been chosen for the impromptu piece of stardom. Director Phil Willmott's take on the comic tale of four young lovers, a very amateur troupe of actors and a magic love potion which causes a great deal of confusion among them, was extremely enjoyable.

Entertained
Amy Ip kept everyone entertained as mischievous sprite Puck, whose careless administering of the potion turns sweethearts into enemies, enemies into sweethearts and makes fairy queen Titania, played by Samantha Sanns, woo an ass.
Puck gives the hapless Bottom the head of a donkey and Titania, at odds with her husband Oberon, falls madly in love with the bizarre looking creature - causing much hilarity along the way.

Surprises
Surprise additions to the proceedings included the more contemporary 1930s hit Blue Moon and a rendition by the cast at the end of the performance of Dream a Little Dream of Me made famous by the Mamas and the Papas in the 1960s.

The UK Touring Theatre are no strangers to Dubai, having performed here on a number of occasions and judging by their performance last week will always be a welcome addition to the social calendar each year.
